Module 2: Theory of Design

  1. Great brief overview of the Dick and Carey Model! You note that the model is not specific to online learning but can be used with online ID. However, you never really expand on this thought. Thus, I am wondering how you see the Dick and Carey Model as applicable to online ID. For example, Dick and Carey’s Instructional Systems Design provide us with guidelines to evaluate whether or not the content and guidance in the course is appropriate. For example, this model asks us to consider questions such as “Do ample practice exercises exist for students to achieve appropriate rehearsal, processing, and knowledge acquisition of the content?” and “Are appropriate tests, activities, and evaluation tools provided to assess student progress?”
You also note one challenge of the model for online design- the evaluation and revision process may need to be adapted in order to take into account an extended timeframe for modification. I am wondering if there are other challenges of using this model for online ID?

  2. This was a difficult but important theory to share in a brief moment. The decision came to share a few of the steps or share them all and end up with a more generic presentation within a few minutes. Each step is critical with no one more important than the other for design. I shortened the steps to lists and step 6, teaching strategy, which I believe you refer to guidance and context as "pre-instruction, content components, presentation, participation and assessment timeline"- brief listing. Instruction, whether online or face-to-face will benefit from the Dick and Carey planning content scope and supportive materials to meet learner need. Supportive materials (step 7) potentially are more important in online settings due to isolation of learners.

There are certainly other considerations for applying the Dick and Carey model to online learning. The analysis of learners is more difficult to accomplish without some prior data which effects the skill level within a course and even a program of studies, adapting performance objectives to fit within a given course timeline but independently performed - in our course there is a to do list created to account for this. The challenge, for example, is accurately calculating the time it takes to complete requested tasks per se to not make courses too light or heavy on task load. Add to that the consideration of task effectiveness and the learning goal. There are many ideas that relate to online learning and the Dick and Carey model have a place in online learning; however, there is much to say in such a short span of time. My medium choice in the time frame could not answer the many possibilities. I am glad though that we can comment for reflection because it serves to fill the gaps.

  3. Rodney,

You mentioned a bit of the difficulty with applying any learning theory to online learning when mentioning the analysis of learners. I've wondered if there's a viable means to identifying prior knowledge for online learners.

Is there any way that the Dick and Carey model could be used to design a prior knowledge assessment that allows for flexibility later in a course?

  4. Rodney,

Good insights to applications. You bring up a good point... Educators need to account for different time frames when designing online instruction. Things such as group activities and even working with technology require more time.
